In ancient times, palm branches symbolized goodness and victory. On Palm Sunday (often referred to as Passion Sunday) Christians commemorate and celebrate the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem. (Matthew 21:1-9). Palm branches were waved and placed in his path as he entered an act of homage and submission, in recognition of Jesus as the promised Messiah. This was the beginning of his journey to the cross, before the week of his death and resurrection, with his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. The day marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent which concludes on Easter Sunday.
